Timor's dark legacy
Article Abstract:
This article examines the likely aftermath of the scheduled plebiscite in East Timor on August 30, 1999, in which the people of the former Portuguese colony will decide whether to remain part of Indonesia or become an independent nation. Relevant points include the policy of the Australian government with regard to the East Timorese question, and whether Australia could have done more to prevent the many grave human rights violations that have taken place in East Timor since Indonesia occupied it in 1975.

East Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmao was considered a criminal by the Indonesian government until Mar, 1999, when President B.J. Habibie announced East Timor could vote for autonomy or independence. Every day Gusmao receives foreign dignitaries and journalists in his home, and speaks of reconciliation between feuding East Timorese groups.
