To trim costs, 3Com says it will eliminate 1,200 jobs

3Com Corp. will lay off nearly 10 percent of its workforce in an attempt to return the firm to profitability. 3Com had a net loss of $142.4 million in its fiscal second quarter, which was the third consecutive quarter showing a loss. One expert said that new products will be a key factor, and that unless demand for the firm's new Internet appliances increases, the firm is unlikely to grow.

Chip makers see a speedy recovery; others have doubts
