To trim costs, 3Com says it will eliminate 1,200 jobs

Article Abstract:

3Com Corp. will lay off nearly 10 percent of its workforce in an attempt to return the firm to profitability. 3Com had a net loss of $142.4 million in its fiscal second quarter, which was the third consecutive quarter showing a loss. One expert said that new products will be a key factor, and that unless demand for the firm's new Internet appliances increases, the firm is unlikely to grow.

Chip makers see a speedy recovery; others have doubts

Article Abstract:

Although 2001 has been a bad year for the semiconductor industry, the Semiconductor Industry Association forecasts 6% growth for the 2002 and 21% in 2003. The growth, they say, will be propelled by reduced inventory levels, increasing prices for memory-chips and a higher demand for personal computers and cellphones.
