A patent on life: scientists seek legal rights to genes

The National Institutes of Health has applied for more than 2,500 patents on gene fragments it has identified since 1991. The agency hopes to receive royalties on the patented fragments used in biotechnological research. The ethics of the patent applications are addressed.
