Too many tears: the news about abused kids just keeps getting worse

The 1993 death of toddler Shanay Johnson at the hands of her crack-addicted mother Patricia Johnson caused Ontario authorities to review the province's child protection system. Ontario will implement new risk-assessment procedures that should help detect chidren in danger of being abused.

When does life begin; the Supreme Court ponders the rights of the fetus

The Supreme Court of Canada will decide whether medical treatment can be mandated for pregnant women. The case involves a 23-year-old woman who was ordered to seek medical attention because she was pregnant and sniffed solvents, placing the fetus at risk for later medical problems.

A patent on life: scientists seek legal rights to genes

Article Abstract:

The National Institutes of Health has applied for more than 2,500 patents on gene fragments it has identified since 1991. The agency hopes to receive royalties on the patented fragments used in biotechnological research. The ethics of the patent applications are addressed.
