Airlines battle unions in court

Article Abstract:

Airline companies have asked the help of the courts to stop labor unions from making illegal work slowdowns or sickouts for they consider these labor protests the major cause of flight schedule disruption that results in the loss of profit. Three air carriers have successfully blocked protests of their respective labor unions. These include Northwest Airlines, American Airlines and Comair.

United cancellations decline

Article Abstract:

Cancellations of United Airlines flights have fallen as the airline's management and its pilots announced that they have made progress on their contract negotiations. Other cancellations were due to maintenance problems, weather and air traffic control. As of Aug 13, only 60 of its 2,400 daily flights were cancelled compared to the 600 out of 4,000 flights that were cancelled during the previous weekend.

US Airways faces Sept. 26 strike deadline

Article Abstract:

US Airways Inc may face a Sep 26, 1999, strike deadline from the International Association of Machinists unless a contract is reached by both parties, according to the National Mediation Board. The company can apply new pay rates and work rules if contract talks fail by Sep 26, 1999, at 12:01 am. The machinists union, which represents 7,000 US Airways mechanics, differ with the company on major issues such as job security, pension and pay.
