U.S. Internet address plan taking shape
Article Abstract:
Network Solutions Inc.'s contract is being extended by the government in an effort that would help move the system to the private sector. The Herndon, VA-based company, which controls Internet address registration, was given a contract extension of two years with the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The deal calls for the company to begin sharing the business by March 31, 1999. Network Solutions will also recognize the international nonprofit organization, which still has to be agreed upon, that will hold control of the system in 1999. The company will also develop and license software which will enable competition in registering the .com, .org and .net addresses.

Fed chief: beef up scrutiny of banks
Article Abstract:
Federal Reserve Board Chmn Alan Greenspan announced that government regulators are mulling the adoption of measures to more closely monitor large banks that could disastrously affect the national economy if they failed. He noted that a slew of bank mergers has increased the need for regulators to tailor their supervision of large banks which operate internationally and engage in increasingly complex activities. Larger banks, for example, are more likely to use their complex derivatives or financial instruments to hedge their risks.

Consumers may have a beef with cattle feed
Article Abstract:
The mad cow disease found in Canada has led the US Food and Drug Administration and Department of Agriculture to ensure that deadly agents are kept out of cattle and cattle feed. Modern husbandry practices have provided cheap, plentiful meat through standard practices as feeding the cattle pieces of their own herd mate, chicken litter and leftover restaurant food.
