U.S. economy snaps employment slump with strong showing

The United States economy broke out of its employment slump in March 2004, creating 308,000 jobs and sparking expectations that the Federal Reserve Board would increase interest rates later in the year. The Labor Department report drove up stocks and the U.S. dollar, but bonds nosedived, in turn pushing up some Canadian mortgage rates.
