Loewen cemeteries to be sold for $193-million
Article Abstract:
Loewen Group Inc will sell 124 of its 500 cemeteries to US investment group McCown De Leeuw and Co to lessen its debt and increase shareholder value. The cemetery properties, which include three funeral homes, are located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Virginia. Loewen also announced that numerous corporate functions will be transferred from Philadelphia to Burnaby, British Columbia.

Weyerhaeuser says it needs MacBlo to compete
Article Abstract:
Weyerhaeuser Co has announced that it wants to acquire MacMillan Bloedel in order to improve its global competitiveness. Weyerhaeuser declared last June 21, 1999 that was proposing a $3.6 billion stock acquisition of MacMillan Bloedel that would result in a $20 billion annual forestry giant. Weyerhaeuser vp for forest lands and strategic planning said the merger of the two firms would create more opportunities in the long run.
