USA's new money-saving export: white-collar jobs

In what could be a devastating trend, U.S. white collar jobs are being outsourced to places where employment costs are less, such as India, China, and other parts of Asia. Some companies claim that the jobs being outsourced are snubbed by U.S. workers. However, even high-paying jobs are being shipped overseas, especially in the high tech industries. Estimates are that within the next 15 years, 2.2 million white-collar jobs and $136 billion in wages would be gone. Organized labor is one of the few segments in this country that is concerned.

New Lucent chief plans job cuts

Lucent Technologies Inc'sinterim CEO Henry Schacht said on Oct 25, 2000 the company plans to reduce jobs to meet its objective of returning to profitability by early 2001. Schacht was appointed by the company's board on Oct 23, replacing former CEO Richard McGinn. Lucent, which has around 125,000 employees, expects to cut undisclosed number of jobs by attrition until January. According to Schacht, the ongoing reorganization will enable the company to eliminate positions.

Qwest will cut 11,000 jobs with US West merger done

Qwest Communications will lay off 11,000 employees after it completes its $36 billion acquisition of regional Bell telephone company US West. CEO Joseph Nacchio said the layoffs, which would mostly affect white-collar workers, is aimed at making Qwest more streamlined. Nacchio added that the move will eliminate redundancies and would help the company refocus on high-growth areas such as wireless phone service and digital subscriber lines.
