Stock warrants are a popular investment product, but investors must be careful of other products packaged under the name "stock warrants." Most investors should be cautious rather than aggressive in using stock warrants. Some financial planners don't use them because they have less complex, more conservative, ways of investing without the troubles associated with warrants.

Investments in asset-test-exempt annuities have increased to $320 mil in the Dec, 1998, quarter because of changes in laws enabling wealthy retirees to qualify for the age pension. Some retirees have been making inappropriate use of these annuities, and some financial institutions are guilty of unethical strategies in attracting investors to the schemes.

Investors have regained their confidence in margin loans as the 1998 Russian loan default and key hedge funds problems fade from memory. Macquarie Bank's director in charge of margin lending reports a 300% increase in demand since Sep, 1998. On average, users of margin loans are gearing to a level far below the 70% maximum.
