Waterhouse shelves merger talks

Toronto-Dominion Bank has abandoned plans to combine the US operations of TD Waterhouse with one of its larger rivals after advanced negotiations with E*Trade. The chief executive officer of Toronto-Dominion Bank confirmed that discussions with E*Trade broke down over issues of control.
