'We will do better'
Article Abstract:
United Airlines noted that weather and traffic-control problems have disrupted the schedules of all major airlines in the US since summer 2000, but problems with its employees have also contributed to the carrier's flight delay problems. The company has already taken measures to improve customer service by hiring 1,300 new pilots, adding spare aircraft to the fleet, speeding the boarding process, enhancing baggage delivery and installing digital-information displays at gates. It is also working to reach new contract agreements with unions.

Airline services: system lets people know you'll be late
Article Abstract:
United Airlines is expanding its services to include telling passengers that their flight will be delayed. United will test a service enabling passengers to designate phone numbers which the airline will call to inform them that their flight will be delayed. Voice-mail messages will be transmitted to the chosen numbers. United passengers are expected to benefit since less than half of its passengers arrived on time this June due to labor and weather problems.

Poor on-time records raise merger red flag for fliers
Article Abstract:
Antitrust regulators are evaluating whether or not the proposed merger of US Airways and United Airlines will lead to higher air fares and kill competition. Consumers have a more basic concern: the merger would unite two carriers with two of the worst records for delays in the industry. A USA Today publication analysis of delayed flights among the 10 largest airlines in the US between Jan 2000 and May 2000, ranked United second and US Airways fourth.
