David Suzuki, the Vancouver-based scientist, wants to replace the gross domestic product (GDP) with the genuine progress indicator (GPI). Unlike the GDP, the GPI would measure the negative economic impact of resource-depleting activities. Suzuki has endowed a foundation to further his economic agenda.

Trees are renewable, but forests are not
Article Abstract:
Lumber companies should not be allowed to clearcut the forests of Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, because it would threaten an entire ecosystem. Although new trees can be planted, it will take hundreds of years for the forest ecosystem to regenerate.
