Sunstorms, and the eruption of gigantic sun spots that shoot clouds of charged particles towards Earth, cause magnificent displays of northern lights when they strike Earth's magnetic poles. They also, however, cause damage by harming computer ships in satellites and interrupting communications, by disrupting short-wave radio signals, and by causing power failures.

Science is not necessarily a set of hard facts, but can be better understood as a process for explaining the world around us. What is read in the news one day may be disproved the next. Science reports are often misleading due to use of jargon, and misinterpretation by the media.

An amateur astronomer describes discovering a new comet in 1994 using a 16-inch telescope in his backyard observatory. He began searching for comets in 1965 and has found 21 in thousands of hours of observing the night sky.
