White past, black future?

The British government introduced rugby at Ronderboshch, South Africa, in the 1870s. During that time, the English only permitted whites to play the game. However, concern that rugby does not embrace all races is generating fears of demonstrations and boycotts. The government of Nelson Mandela and South Africa's National Sports Council are asking for resignations and renewal, hoping this would encourage black participation.

Australian rugby could be revitalized by combining players from both the union and the league teams. The difference in rules could be accepted with intense training, and the sport would gather a new audience looking forward to exciting play. The Wallabies need to gain mobility and balance their ratio between power and speed. Financial incentive and legal arbitration could be the key to saving Australian rugby.

The Western Bulldogs Australian rules football team attempted to enter its third grand final competition since 1938 in 1998, but was defeated by the Adelaide Crows. The Crows will compete against North Melbourne. Sydney football fans feel their city is the center of this game, but the News Corporation has decided 6 of the current 20 clubs must be eliminated by 2000.
