Newspapers struggle as ad sales have 'fallen off a cliff'
Article Abstract:
The year 2001 is turning up to possibly be the most turbulent since the media recession of 1991 for newspaper publishers who are often among the first to feel changes in the health of the overall economy. Amost all of the major chains have been surprised by how steepy some ad sales have plummeted. The numbers look especially bleak for major papers that benefited most from 2000's strong market, boosted by the entry of Internet companies.

USA-lycos deal treads on heels of internet gold rush
Article Abstract:
The recent merger of Internet gateway Lycos and entertainment company USA Networks is the latest in megadeals which involve Internet-related companies. The Internet has become the latest frontier for corporations and investors who are seeking to tap the promise of the booming market. In fact, venture capital companies have tripled their investments in Internet-related businesses from $1.1 billion in 1996 to $3.3 billion in 1998.
