Will merger bring higher airfares? Experts disagree
Article Abstract:
Brookings Institution senior fellow Clifford Winston believes the merger of United Air Lines and US Airways will not lead to higher fares. Winston, who has studied airline mergers for 20 years, said airline consolidation had negligible effect on airfares. He added that this particular merger would not be different from the previous ones. Moreover, both airlines have promised not to raise domestic fares for two years once their merger has been approved, except to adjust for higher fuel prices and inflation.

Cheapest airfares on Net are too hard to find, report says
Article Abstract:
Last-minute airlines discount fares are 90% cheaper than what airlines and travel agents quote but are not always easy to find on the World Wide Web, according to Kenneth Mead, the Inspector-General of the Dept of Transportation. Testifying before a Senate hearing, Mead said airlines should include Internet specials on their Web site, which reservation agents should discuss with travellers. He added that none of the reservation agents surveyed by his office provided information on Internet fares.

Analysis say air merger will raise fares
Article Abstract:
Trans World Airlines Inc's (TWA) sale to American Airlines Inc will result in more expensive fares for passengers flying to Lambert-St Louis International Airport, warn airline analysts. According to analysts, American Airlines will raise TWA's fares from airline consolidators. Further, American Airlines may no longer offer deep discounts to corporations that frequently use TWA, analysts say.
