World Bank Challenged: Are the Poor Really Helped?
Article Abstract:
In response to lack of evidence that its $55 billion spent annually to help the world's poor actually makes any difference, the World Bank is starting to listen to development economists like those at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Poverty Action Lab, who advocate rigorous, randomized evaluations, much like clinical trials, and comparison of outcomes. At present, only 2 percent of the World Bank's projects have been properly evaluated to assess their impact. The bank is currently planning large-scale impact evaluations and randomized trials of its aid and development programs.
