The three letter Internet address extension, .com, was originally intended for American commercial organizations only, with .gov, .org and .net for government agencies, non-profit organizations and network service providers respectively. The .com extension, however, have been used up, and two new top-level domains , .info and .biz, will be launched by Afilias and NeuLevel respectively, by the end of 2001.

Because of the ever-increasing number of Web sites, and the limited umber of domain names, there is a growing feud over who has the right to particular domain names. Ownership of generalised domain names such as sydney.com.au and darwin.com.au are particularly hard to determine.
