The investment in annuities that offer the security of a guaranteed income is a good idea but only for a part of one's savings as income from annuities does not rise with inflation. The remaining savings should be left in stocks and bonds and it is wise to remember that in a world of financial risk stocks provide a safety net.

A financial adviser gives her views on whether it is a good idea to retire the mortgage before it's due and enjoy a debt-free retirement. If the mortgage interest is very low and does not allow itemizing the deductions, and the investments are earning less than the cost of the loans, then it is better to pay off the mortgage.
