Emerging markets take off
Article Abstract:
Emerging markets might be the best performing asset class of 2001 the head of global emerging markets at WestAM, Allan Conway, thinks. Emerging markets were a good place for money in the first month of 2001, returning 13% for the month, although for the year 2000 the index went down 32% with many Asian markets much worse, leaving a lot of room on the upside for 2001. In 1/01, Asian markets went up by 22%. The ratio of emerging markets' total stock market capitalization to value of the emerging economies, GDPs, is very low, which would make them attractive places to invest. The US economy is discussed as a factor.
