Faded blue chip ripe for revival

The Australian, American, and European economies have been largely untouched by the Russian and Asian financial troubles, but obvious signals from the sharemarket indicate the boom may be over. When the overseas markets are considered, many companies dealing with blue chips and building materials look very vulnerable. Among the four major stocks comprising this trend are Boral, Pioneer International, James Hardie, and CRS, which have found their share prices at their lows for 1998.

The Crown casino's over-capitalization has resulted in the industry becoming vulnerable to market fluctuations. Many other casinos such as Star City have reported reduced earnings. Star City has taken such measures as reducing the number of its employees, cutting overtime, and eliminating contract labor. However, the Asian financial crisis will still adversely affect casino profits.

It started out as a A$500,000 portfolio and was to be reviewed each year, but was overlooked. When recently brought out, the market value was found to be A$869,1888, showing a 75% gain. The best performer was a transport company, Brambles, with a share price up 175.6%.
