Research from Stuart Fechner, manager of Navigator Research, shows that the performance of small company funds can drop off when they close. When the fund closes, the task of actively managing the fund is more difficult and finding a small company fund that is open to investors is proving difficult.

In the 1990s, friendly societies like the Australian Unity and IOOF began to issue friendly society bonds that were similar to insurance bonds that offered generous tax benefits to the investors. The tightening of tax benefits since then and the reasons for it being an exodus are discussed.
