For Frank Layden, only the ball is round
Article Abstract:
Frank Layden committed himself to losing 180 pounds after seeing his friend and baseball umpire John McSherry die during the first game of the 1996 season. Layden sought the advice of his physician, and began the first phase with a 75-pound loss. He then began walking and continued to eliminate fat, soda, alcohol, and salt from his diet until he reached an acceptable weight of 185 pounds.

Members only: am I too old to be a Daddy?
Article Abstract:
The prejudice against older fathers can be dissipated by the experiences of older dads who have more time and interest in their children. If they are retired, that can provide their children with more time and undivided attention. Even older women, thanks to in vitro fertilization, can enjoy having children since childbearing years are extended physiologically through medical technology.

Members only: nanny was beyond words
Article Abstract:
One woman reflects on the death of her grandmother and the recent custom of speaking in honor of the deceased at funerals. None of her family spoke when the minister asked at her grandmother's funeral. Instead of feeling guilty, she reasons that sometimes it is better to reflect silently to oneself than to speak.
