Sales of all-terrain or four-wheel drive vehicles up 43 percent in Australia and are also booming in Europe and the US. The smaller, lighter models are the best sellers because they offer practicality and versatility for people who want to use the vehicle for weekday commutes and weekend recreation. Four vehicles are surveyed: Subaru's Forester, Honda's CR-V, Land Rover's Freelander and Toyota's RAV-4.

The popularity of large four-wheel drive vehicles has given way to smaller vehicles of the same nature. The popularity of all-terrain vehicles increased about 64% in 1998. Honda's CRV and Subaru's Forester are two of the most popular makes, with Toyota's RAV4 and Suzuki's Vitara following in popularity.
