The home equity loan, also known as a revolving line of credit, can save borrowers thousands of dollars in interest payments or more than the most inexpensive standard mortgage. Home equity loans can automatically cut debt right away by lowering the principal. Home loans do carry higher interest rates and if they are not paid off quickly can be less cost-effective than standard variable loans.
