Indexed funds: the investor's friend or foe?

The popularity of indexed funds in the US has resulted in positive responses by Australian investors. Indexed funds offer investors average returns with low broker fees. They also produce better long-term gains most investors feel are worth the time and attention. However, some dangers include paying too much for stocks, judging stocks on the basis of index weightings rather than their merits, and discrepancies between price and value.
