Kids' money: give a little, save a lot

Putting money into investments for children may turn into a nightmare if not planned correctly. Following the 1980 tax changes in Australia, there is almost no tax advantage, and sometimes a penalty, for putting investment in children's names. The best options for investing for children include family discretionary trusts, bare trusts, endowment warrants, friendly society bonds, testamentary trusts and children's bank accounts.

If there is reasonable profit growth in the corporate sector it is reasonable that Australia's All Ordinaries index will continue its bull run and again hit another milestone at the 3,000 mark. Investors are hedging their bets by turning to stable funds. On the other hand author Robert Prechter Jr., is calling for the Dow Jones Industrial Average to drop below 400.

Australian investor support for smaller new sharemarket floats have fallen off since 1997. While small and large company floats in 1997 outperformed the market, 7 and 17 percent respectively, 1998 presents a different picture. Local price shares began to fall and the response by investors has been lukewarm.
