Pico Iyer, the author of many books on travel, narrates his first year in Kyoto where he had been to sample life in a Zen temple on the back streets of the ancient Japanese capital. Iyer believes that part of the joy of travel comes from seeing the hidden patterns, seizing on the sudden opportunities that get lost in the culture and familiarity of life at home.
