Researchers are aiming to find ways to prevent major diseases of aging including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative disease, thereby increasing longevity. Small-molecular drugs that would activate a family of genes called sirtuins are being developed, with an aim to prevent certain metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and neurological diseases like Lou Gehrig's disease.

A diet consisting of antioxidant-rich and mostly colorful fruits and vegetables including spinach, broccoli, spirulina (blue-green algae), red apples and grapes is appropriate for longevity due to prevention of age-related diseases like stroke, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Lesser intake of calories and periodic fasting can also help in a slow aging process.

Scientists, after extensive research, are coming up with reasons for aging and methods to slowdown aging and improve longevity. An anti-oxidant rich diet, regular exercise, avoiding obvious environmental pollutants such as cigarettes, and coping with stress are recommended for a long and healthy life.
