P.H. Newby
Article Abstract:
Broadcasting administrator and novelist Percy Newby spent only a short time as a schoolteacher before serving in Egypt during the second world war. This experience had a very significant impact on him, and he drew on it from time to time for the rest of his life. His time in Egypt partly inspired his first novel, 'Journey to the Interior,' which was published in 1945, and his second, 'Agents and Witnesses,' published in 1947. His most successful book was 'The Picnic at Sakkara,' published in 1955.
