Selling yourself short
Article Abstract:
Short selling, which is used by hedge funds, works well when done right, but if a fund manager gets it wrong, it may be very costly. Products that use short selling to bolster returns are proliferating along with bearish sentiment, but the fund managers of Australia have not , for the most part, tried it. Platinum Asset Management's international fund, and managing director Kerr Neilson, Portfolio Partners High Growth Shares Trust, and Deutsche Asset Management's Absolute Return Group's Global Equity Long/Short Fund are discussed. The Australian Stock Exchange, with an equity market less liquid than larger counterparts, limits stocks that can be sold short, publishing a daily list.
