Should you package that car?
Article Abstract:
Australians may want to figure out at what point it is more tax-effective to have a car provided by a company versus owning a car and claiming business use. What is called 'novated leasing' in Australia is advertised as making everyone a winner: more choice of car and chance to build equity in it for the employee and being spared fleet management and other problems for the employer. A draft ruling from the tax people, however, will bring an unpleasant surprise for those using cars costing A$55,134+. the issue is whether the novated lease provides full or partial novation. If the word 'sublease' is in the contract, likely novation is partial.

Managed funds: the ideal and the reality
Article Abstract:
Managed funds should be the ideal choice for small investors because of their low entry price and low risk. However, direct share ownership has increased because of large floats. Small investors believe the returns they have achieved are far more profitable than what fund managers could achieve. John C. Bogle has written a new book called "Bogle on Mutual Funds - New Perspective for the Intelligent Investor," which has been recommended by many in the business.

Go direct
Article Abstract:
Many investors are becoming interested in direct investing because of convenience, control or to avoid broker or fund manager fees. Discount brokers are not as common in Australia as they are in the US, Canada or Britain because of a less sophisticated financial industry. Direct investing will continue to grow as accessibility in telephone and the Internet services grows.
