Debenture bloodbath

Article Abstract:

The debenture industry is in turmoil following a crackdown by the Australian Securities $ Investments Commission (ASIC), which has resulted in 22 companies withdrawing their prospectuses from sale over the past year 2003. The regulator is concerned that investors are not getting enough information about risks involved when they invest in debentures, and products such as unsecured notes and bonds.

June 2003 and July 2003 saw the highest daily trading volumes at the Australian Stock Exchange and the highest number of trades since the tech boom. In August, the average day saw around 63,000 trades, and more than half of those trades were by retail investors. Views are presented on how to maximize profits for investors at the stock market.
