A longing for Lhasa
Article Abstract:
Explorers for over three centuries have been drawn to Lhasa, despite the dangers involved. Until early in this century, travel to Tibet was forbidden to Europeans, yet several believed the goal was worth the hardship. Jesuit, Capuchin and French Lazarist missionaries survived the trip in the 17th and 18th centuries, while Russian explorers and French and English scholars have also entered Lhasa, often for lengthy stays. The best information about the capital was provided by pundits, Indian scholars sponsored by the British for their wide-ranging Survey of India.

The giddy heights of expectation
Article Abstract:
Preparing for an expedition and starting a love affair share several characteristics. Both involve apprehension, are usually conducted in secrecy, and carry a high probability of failure. In both cases, the prospect of success offers sufficient justification for beginning, and looking far ahead is not possible. Explorers who have a stable intimate relationship with someone who travels with them can lead constantly exciting, guilt-free lives.

Hovering over Africa
Article Abstract:
The deputy leader of the Trans-African Hovercraft Expedition recalls his experience. He feels the expedition succeeded neither in selling hovercraft nor in contributing to scientific research. Scientific research was difficult when travelling fast in a crowded vehicle. Nothing memorable was written and no great films were made. The goal of covering 8,000 kilometers was achieved.
