Article Abstract:
The Church of England's efforts to alleviate urban poverty have been criticized as somewhat ineffective by Michael Pacione of Strathclyde University. The Church runs two poverty-relief programs, the Inter-Parish Linkage Scheme, which is meant to encourage wealthy parishes to donate funds to poorer ones, and the Church Urban Fund, which organizes urban improvement programs. Pacione's research shows some affluent parishes are against transfer of funds, and that poorer parishes are often unable to come up with their required 10% share of the funding for urban improvement projects. He recommends the Church use government statistics on urban poverty to guide its efforts at distribution of funds.

Global warming: the key issue?
Article Abstract:
Global warming was the dominant topic at the 1992 Institute of British Geographers Conference. The greenhouse effect could lead to rising seas, which would force rethinking of man-made coastal barriers. The warming trend could also impact European agriculture, making the North more productive and the South less so. One speaker, David Bowen, claimed that there is no evidence of global warming, and that other environmental problems are more pressing. Bowen worries that, if global warming is not the threat it has been represented as, an anti-environmental law backlash may result.
