Models for Fiber-Matrix Composites with Local Load Sharing
Article Abstract:
Composites are used increasingly in place of aluminum and steel because of their high strength to weight ratios. Models are developed to analyze fiber matrix composites that share the load among fibers. The design problem is to determine the load that can safely be placed on a large section such that failure does not occur. The Harlow-Phoenix model is discussed. It is useful for one particular problem. A second method has greater generalization but is not as powerful.

The Internal Estimation of System Reliability from Component Test Data
Article Abstract:
Reliability engineers need to estimate system reliability prior to assembly. This is particularly important if the system is expensive or hard to test. The difficulties in making such estimates are discussed. Various statistical approaches are identified.
