Picking up the pieces of the USSR
Article Abstract:
Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States of which it is the chief member are beset with severe but probably curable economic problems. These problems developed mainly from the inefficient economy of the old USSR and from the reluctance of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, to approve a rapid conversion to a free market system. Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar are now pursuing this conversion but are encountering three principal difficulties: falling living standards, hyperinflation and a paucity of circulating rubles.

All set for a change: Turkey has to address its internal problems if it is to achieve its geopolitical goals
Article Abstract:
Turkey's unique geographical position between Europe and the Middle East could give it a pivotal role in world politics. While the country already maintains good relations with both the West and the former Soviet Union, its social and economic problems are hampering potential success. Riots stemming from economic crises and serious conflicts with Turkey's Kurdish population are some of the major problems Turkey's Prime Minister Tansu Ciller has to resolve in order to maintain and improve Turkey's stature with the European Union.

Life on the edge
Article Abstract:
Gammalsvenskby, Ukraine, has been a Swedish enclave since the late 18th century. Village residents speak a Swedish dialect, mixed with German and Russian. Contact with Sweden and Finland at the the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century brought visitors and books to the village. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, however, the economic situation in Gammalsvenskby has gotten worse. Many younger residents are migrating and seeking a better life in Sweden.
