WP&L blazes a trail
Article Abstract:
Wisconsin Power and Light Co. became the first utility to engage in sulfur dioxide emission allowance trading when it sold credits to the Tennessee Valley Authority and Duquesne Light Co, in compliance with the 1990 Clean Air Act. Although hesitation still prevails among utilities, several transactions are expected to push through during summer, 1992. Utility heads hailed the trading scheme as proof that environmental issues can be addressed following a market-based approach.

1991 Nuclear output
Article Abstract:
Global nuclear energy generation increased to a little over 2 trillion kilowatthours for 1991, equivalent to one-sixth of the world's total electricity output, compared to 1.9 trilion kilowatthours in 1990. The growth was attributed to improved plant performance, since only 420 nuclear plants were in operation in 1991 as opposed to 424 in 1990. Also during 1991, four nuclear units were connected to utility grids, eight were shut down, while76 were undergoing construction.
