The future of Western corridors
Article Abstract:
Land use policy for the Western US is turning away from multiple-use planning, which has been characterized by Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt as a failure. Utilities, to safeguard appropriate areas for utility corridor routes, must become more engaged in the process of land management and planning, at federal, regional, state, and local levels. The Western Utility Group, including utilities from an 11 state area, and other entities has developed the 1992 Western Regional Corridor Study. The study involved a mammoth mapping effort and is to be used as an aid to land management planning, an example of the cooperation of the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. The study is meant as a reference document, and continued involvement by utilities interacting with government agencies is anticipated in planning processes.
