The holiday crowd
Article Abstract:
The ECOMOST project is an undertaking of the International Federation of Tour Operators aimed at creating a model of sustainable tourism. Using Mallorca as its experimental site, the group set out to determine the state of the area's tourist industry and propose solutions to problems, if any. The project revealed the most pressing problems facing Mallorca, such as decreased cash flow in many businesses, dwindling water supply, unclear zoning regulations to protect environmentally sensitive areas and the lack of environmental experts in policy making. ECOMOST has also become a springboard for similar sustainable development efforts in other areas.

Electric dreams, (electric cars and their future)
Article Abstract:
Electric automobiles could have a very bright future, as they are ideally suited to urban driving, and offer an economical and low-polluting alternative to petroleum-based engines. However, the many obstacles facing electric vehicles include cultural opposition, business opposition from the steel and automotive industries, and simple logistical problems, such as recharging concerns. Observers are watching the carbon fibre markets, which will supply most of the components for these cars, to see if prices will decline far enough to allow widespread purchase and manufacture.
