The measure of a utility
Article Abstract:
A trend toward developing benchmark programs is seen among utilities. Formal benchmarking is a process that is fairly young in the power industry, but is being encouraged both by the need to identify and evaluate internal and external business factors as competition intensifies, and also by interest in benchmarking among regulatory bodies. Competition in the industry can raise obstacles to the sharing of business information, but a number of utilities are forming small groups, composed of 10-15 utilities, to conduct market research, for example. The early stage of benchmarking activity among utilities means most are not ready to engage in benchmarking across industries. The benchmarking process is seen as useful for planning future growth of utilities.
