Wiring the world
Article Abstract:
The privatization trend prevailing among most of the countries worldwide has given Electricite de France the opportunity to assist electric utilities in their power generation projects and provide investments in the process. Countries such as Greece, Romania and Ivory Coast have signed multimillion dollar contracts with Electricite de France through their respective utility companies for the construction, maintenance and repair of planned power plants. Such technical collaboration would eventually pave the way for the realization of a globalized electric power technology.

On the brink of renewal
Article Abstract:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) released a set of regulations on the renewal of operating licenses of nuclear power plants in Dec 1991. Under the new rules, the NRC may extend the licenses for another 20 years. Nuclear plants are allowed to operate for 40 years under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954. With the passage of the new rules, the NRC judged that existing nuclear plants are safe. But electric utilities are required to study technical matters that will ensure proper operation of the plants after the first 40 years.
