Modesty and Ignorance(*)

Article Abstract:

This article argues that modesty involves underestimating one's self-worth. The author responds to G.F. Shueler's challenge to distinguish underestimation from other forms of ignorance, such as stupidity and self-deception. Three types of modesty are proposed, according to how much the agent underestimates his or her self worth.

Why IS Modesty a Virtue?

Article Abstract:

This article criticizes the underestimation theory of modesty, which defines modesty as underestimating one's self-worth. The author argues that one could underestimate one's self-worth and still not be modest. The suggestion that the value of modesty is in its positive social consequences, is criticized.
