Mothers, citizenship, and independence: a critique of pure family values
Article Abstract:
The liberal state should support a variety of family structures, rather than favoring the traditional two-parent family as William Galston suggests. Galston maintains that the intact two-parent family is better for children. However, that position is based on the privileging of the male-oriented norm of self-sufficiency, a viewpoint which contributes to the subordination of women. Women have traditionally contributed to society through unpaid labor such as caring for children and other dependents. Liberal society should recognize and encourage a variety of ways that citizens can make meaningful social contributions.

'Political Liberalism': an internal critique
Article Abstract:
The conception of justice as fairness advanced by John Rawls in 'Political Liberalism' violates his own criteria for a political conception. According to Rawls, a political conception must be one that can gain support from an overlapping consensus of reasonable people with diverse philosophical and religious views. Burdens of judgment, reasonable moral psychology and political constructivism could be eliminated from the conception of the reasonable to make the concept of justice better conform to the requirements of a political conception.

Citizenship, individualism, and democratic politics
Article Abstract:
John Rawls's concept of the Original Position does not represent an overly individualistic view of personhood as some radical critics have suggested. The Original Position is a fictionalized, minimalist representation of basic principles that is not intended to portray an ideal individual, but rather to provide a principled starting point. Thus critics such as Iris Young, Bonnie Honig and Chantal Mouffe are mistaken when they criticize Rawls's Original Position for being overly abstract and general.
