Reasons, attitudes, and values: replies to Sturgeon and Piper
Article Abstract:
Elizabeth Anderson rejects Nick Sturgeon's and Adrian Piper's consequentialist (C) criticisms of her rational attitude theory of value (R). Sturgeon's criticism is untenable due to the attribution of intrinsic value to states of affairs in contrast to persons and its poor articulation of an adequate rationale for the ends it recommends. Piper's criticism is rendered defective by virtue of the fact that the critic uses Cartesian psychology to which the rationalist does not adhere. Besides, the test that is used to reject R is not an actual one but only hypothetical.
