A Mexican milestone

Article Abstract:

The initiative taken by seven Mexican non-governmental organizations in 1994 to check unfair practices in presidential elections has become a force to reckon with. The national coalition, Civic Alliance, drew support from hundreds of other organizations and social movements. This marked the beginning of the end of the decades-old authoritarian regime. Though originally meant to be a temporary body, it was allowed to continue its vigilance of the actions of the elected officials.

The weight of the past

Article Abstract:

Mexico's newly-elected president, Ernesto Zedillo, and his party, the Party of the Democratic Revolution, must act quickly if democracy is to be successfully implemented in Mexico. The July 6, 1997 general elections ousted the Institutional Revolutionary Party after seventy years of leadership. President Zedillo faces significant obstacles which must be overcome before true democracy can be achieved.
