A modest proposal to deregulate infant adoptions
Article Abstract:
Birth mothers and adoptive parents stand to gain from the liberalization of rules to legal adoption of children. Allowing birth mothers the right to contract with adoptive parents at a mutually agreeable price, with the right to reclaim the child a week after the contract is implemented, can be done with existing legislative controls. While retaining the rules for screening adoptive parents, the ban on birth-mother and adoptive parents advertising can be lifted. But allowing birth mothers to contract directly with adoptive parents will not increase the adoption of disabled, nonwhite and older children.
