Article Abstract:

The authors distinguish between compromise, which requires parties to relinquish a set of priorities, and problem solving, in which all parties achieve their priorities. Techniques to achieve problem solving rather than compromises include examining priorities to obtain the underlying reasons the parties have for establishing the priorities they hold.
