A view from Slovenia

Article Abstract:

Communism's collapse in Eastern and Central Europe led those regions' newly liberated nations to seek renewed membership in the Western European community to which they naturally belonged. Their integration has since been delayed by ethnic and religious strife. European federation requires the achievement of a variety of goals, including the growth of the European Union (EU) into a truly effective governing body, the continuance of NATO and US involvement in Europe, expansion of NATO and EU membership to Central and Eastern European nations by 2002, and the engagement of Russia in European affairs.

A Europe fit for a new generation

Article Abstract:

Young Europeans see an enhanced role for the European Union as it welcomes new members from Eastern Europe. It is a supranational system guaranteeing peaceful cooperation within the Continent and with important Community institutions which serve all the citizens. Young Britons may need to change their thinking to what they want for Europe as a whole rather than pretending the United Kingdom can go it alone. The new economic climate is characterized by deregulation, privatization and liberalization as the government becomes a less important force in economic matters.
