An uncertain prognosis
Article Abstract:
Grigory Yavlinsky, Russian Duma member and leader of the Yabloko party feels that the 1996 presidential election was held democratically, but Russia is making slow progress, politically and economically. He opines that the continuing war in Chechnya, unemployment and slow industrial development reflect the government's incompetence. President Boris Yeltsin must address military and land reforms, the growing problem of corruption and improvements in civil institutions and public financing. Yavlinsky asserts that US-Russian relations should focus on nuclear disarmament, terrorism and the environment.
